Last Exit Eudora - noch unbestätigt

Wie Macosrumors und Slashdot berichten, verdichten sich
Gerüchte um die bevorstehende Einstellung des
Mailprogramms Eudora durch den Hersteller Qualcomm .
Grund: Umsatzmangel aufgrund des Überflusses freier
Mailprogramme.

Eudora update [16:12 EST, 1/28]

No small number of readers and sources chimed in with more
information on the situation affecting Eudora Software at
Qualcomm. In fact, nearly a thousand email messages have
poured in since yesterday's posting on the subject. Although
the (pseduo-official, a press release is still as much as two
weeks away) word from Qualcomm is that although Eudora
Planner is definitely behind expectations, that the Eudora
Software division will not be shut down and that Eudora Pro
for all platforms is expected to continue as an acti vely
developed product, the number of people who suggest
otherwise is staggering.

Apparently, Qualcomm's decision to switch from Palm OS to
Windows CE for its Internet-enabled phone is the root of
many of the company's current problems -- and, as a result
of the company's new "alliance" with Microsoft, pressure is
being put on Qualcomm to dump Eudora. This, combined
with the c ompany's troubles with Planner, are making for
major changes in that division in the near future. That much
is in extremely little doubt.

According to sources close to Qualcomm, the Eudora
division has in fact been up for sale for some time, and to
date, no major buyers have expressed serious interest. Most
of the team migrated from Now Software has been idle for
over a month -- having been instructed to pursue no further
work on t he Planner code base -- and several of them have
reportedly left the company.

All told, this does not bode well for users who have been
planning on new software releases from Qualcomm. Although
there is little likelihood that Qualcomm itself will suffer much
as a result (software is a small part of its business), the
same may not be said for users.

MOSR will be continuing its coverage of this story as
information becomes available.

Eudora at risk? [15:05 EST, 1/27]

An anonymous source reported today that there is a good
chance that Qualcomm may attempt to sell or just plain shut
down most -- if not all -- of its Eudora division in the near
future. Apparently, the company's purchase of Now Software
drove the Eudora Software division into a rapidly money-
losing situation, and with the company's plans for Eudora
Planner so tightly tied into its other software products' future,
Qualcomm may elect to focus on its multi-billion-dollar
telecommun ications business and divest itself of its software
division, which has lost as much as 10 million dollars to date,
according to some reports.

Although sources at both Apple and Qualcomm confirm
much of this, no final decisions appear to have been made --
leaving the future of products like Eudora Pro uncertain.
